Explanation

An explanation is a piece of writing that gives straightforward information. It explanation of natural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena, e.g. how volcano eruption occurs, or how to prevent bone fracture at an old age.

Communicative purpose

To enable the readers to understand the processes invention or the working of phenomena.

Example of explanation texts

Reports on natural phenomena, articles on scientific inventions, documentary films.

An explanation texts can have as many paragraphs as the writer wants. However, it mainly consists of two parts: general statement, explanation

General statement

This part presents the subject that is going to be explained

Narrative

A narrative is a text that tells a story. The story can be imaginary or base on a real incident.

Communicative purpose

To entertain the reader.

Example:

Short stories, folk tales, legends, fables, myths.

The text organization of a narrative

A narrative text can have as many paragraphs as you want. However, it mainly consists of three parts, the orientation, sequence of even/complication and resolution.

Orientation

Presents the setting of your story and introduces the characters.

Complication

The story continues here. Usually, there will be an event or sequence of events that lead the characters into a complication (some from of conflict that disrupts the normal even). Tension starts to build up to a climax, and this draws anticipation the readers.

Resolution

The problem starts to get resolved. Something the story ends happily or vice versa, and at other times the resolution (i.e. the ending of the story) is left the readers to decide.

Report

A report provides factual information about a specific subject like social phenomenon (e.g. riot, demonstration, unemployment), natural (e.g. earthquakes, rain, storm, living things - animals) and man – made. The factual information provided in the report text is objective.

Communicative purpose

To inform about a specific subject.

Reference books, science reports, weather reports.

Opening statement that introduces the subject.

Description

Supporting paragraphs that describe the subject in detail in other to assist the readers to get more understanding knowledge about subject ( e.g. its qualities, appearances, habits or behaviors, uses, etc)

Review

A review is a piece of writing that critiques or critically analyzes artwork for public audience. For example, a book, film/move, play/drama, opera, exhibition, concert, ballet or song. A review offers a reasoned opinion about the artwork’s qualities to the readers.

Communicative purpose

To critique, analyze and evaluate artwork and also to make the reviewer’s point of view know.

The texts organization of a review text  

A review comprises orientation, interpretative recount, evaluation and evaluative summation.

Orientation

This part provides a brief outline of the subject matter or the background information in terms of describing the artwork. Orientation states the points, which are to be analyzed and evaluated at the following paragraphs. Sometimes the artwork is also compared to the other artwork. The reviewer however, needs to use the same points of support for both things. For instance, in two movies, the reviewer uses two point of comparison, excitement and theme.

Interpretative recount

This part summarizes the contents or plots the artwork, for example a brief description characters, the approach and the scope of work.

Evaluation

This part analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the subject matter (from the reviewer’s opinion and judgment).

Evaluative summation

This part provides the reviewer’s final judgment. This part normally contains phrases and metaphorical expressions.
